Home Suite Hope is a Halton based organization that helps mothers with children overcome homelessness. Home Suite Hope is a four-year program that provides homeless mothers with rental subsidies, access to childcare, transportation, two years college education, life skills, professional development, mentorship, employment supports, and intensive case management. The outcomes are financial independence and long-term stability. The impact is intergenerational.
In year one, they secure housing for participants, assess academic aptitudes and teach key life skills. For the next two years, participants attend Sheridan College. In year four, participants are supported in securing employment by a volunteer Industry Council, while Home Suite Hope transitions them to independence.
Food For Life is a Halton based organization that rescues and redistributes millions of pounds each year of good surplus food, including fruits, vegetables, proteins and dairy from local farmers, wholesalers and grocery stores. Together with their allied agency partners in Halton and Hamilton, they supply about $50 of fresh groceries weekly to approximately 3,200 households in, including 900 in Oakville. FFL also supports 3 community fridges and 1 freezer in Oakville. For every $100 donated, FFL provides $62.50 of food to their clients.
Fare Share Food Bank is a small non-profit registered Oakville charity that has been run entirely by volunteers since 1987. They currently have about 700 households registered for regular weekly support. This is about 2,500 individuals, many of whom are children. This represents a 40% increase in demand in one year!
Financial donations are used to pay rent and utilities, and to buy food. No salaries are paid; all employees are volunteers. They receive no government or agency funding. The bulk of the non-perishable food comes from food drives held at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas and ongoing donations from churches, schools, businesses, supermarkets and others in the community.
