Society of Saint Vincent de Paul ( SSVP), founded in 1833, is a community based volunteer organisation that supports families in need, regardless of their race, denomination or background. By visiting homes in the community, our members are able to assist families-in-need, those struggling to support themselves and those who are ill and alone. We listen with compassion and refer families to local resources and agencies. We help with essential needs such as securing food, furniture, and clothing but we also advocate access to benefits such as the Canada Learning Bond, Recreation and Camp subsidies, emergency dental assistance, and further education.
The Halton Particular Council (HPC) oversees the five "conferences"
(outreach groups) of SSVP in Oakville. One goal of the HPC is to provide better access to fresh fruit and vegetables for families-in-need by working in partnership with the Halton Fresh Food Box program. In addition to providing healthy food to the families SSVP serves, we are focused on alleviating dental suffering by taking a three pronged approach. First, by helping to connect children under 18 to Healthy Smiles Ontario; second, by connecting adults to teeth cleaning opportunities and finally, by responding to urgent dental needs not covered by regional programs. With the support of the St Andrew’s House Tour, SSVP will be able to continue and expand this essential work.
Safetynet is an Oakville-based charity who help financially disadvantaged families.
Their objective is to set up families and individuals with their basic economic or material needs as well as providing educational support allowing them to assimilate into our communities.
Registered families are provided with clothing, homewares, diapers, bicycles and furniture, most of which come from donations. They also offer children and youth free academic tutoring and music lessons.
Proceeds from the Tour will go towards helping service the low-income families who are in need of assistance who would otherwise be kept on a waitlist.
